Sport, technology and business

A complex love triangle?

The synergies between sport, technology, and business are dynamic, but often complex, filled with opportunities as well as challenges. Athletes are meant to push the boundaries of human performance, and technology offers innovative tools to enhance their talents through smart equipment, wearables, or data analytics. The integration of these sectors, however, is not always smooth. Entrepreneurs and tech companies know that sport is a fertile ground for innovation, but we know that founders, researchers and athletes are not running the same race, and usually have different finish lines. This creates a fascinating triangular relationship, where the pressure for constant improvement, competition, and innovation exists on all sides.

Technology is serving the athletes - and athletes are giving back

Many top athletes are not only consumers of technology but are actively engaged in shaping its future, through their own resources and business journeys.

The most epic role model…

Great post! I love how you’ve highlighted the powerful parallels between athletes and entrepreneurs—the shared mindset of resilience, focus, and continuous improvement is spot on. The examples of Kobe Bryant and Stephen Curry are inspiring reminders that athletes can be true changemakers beyond their sports careers.

You raise an important point about accessibility: how do we ensure that technological advancements in sports are inclusive and not limited to the elite few? Also, the question about balancing AI-driven performance with the human essence of sport is crucial—can innovation and authenticity coexist without compromise?

Excited to see how these synergies between sport, tech, and business continue to shape the future. Collaboration really is key

SPORT AND DISABILITY

Nowadays it's very rare not to find a sport which can be played by disabled people. Althought this might seem difficult to think, especially for some sports like rugby or tennis, the paralympic sports are a beautiful reality which can be seen by many as an insipiration not to give up in life.

This idea shouldn't be a problem, especially in developed countries, but the right to phisical activity is not guaranteed in many developing countries, in which people with disabilities can't do basically anything. These obstacles have a negative effect on creating activity pathways for disabled people and the use of sport to achieve goals which can be international. But it shouldn't be like this. In fact, sport help reduce the stigma and discrimanation associated with disability because it can transform the perception the society has about these people, by highlighting their skills and talent and reducing the tendecy…

This post beautifully highlights the power of Paralympic sports—not only in showcasing talent and resilience but also in driving social change. It’s inspiring to see how sports can challenge stereotypes and promote inclusion, but it’s also a reminder of the disparities that still exist, especially in developing countries.

The barriers faced by women with disabilities are particularly concerning—double discrimination based on both gender and ability is a major issue that needs more attention. Increasing opportunities for participation at all levels, from local programs to international competitions, is crucial for change.

The history of the Paralympic movement reminds us how sport can break down barriers and unite communities. Hopefully, with continued advocacy and investment, more developing countries will be empowered to support athletes with disabilities and foster truly inclusive sports cultures.

Inclusion should never be a privilege—it should be a right. 💪🏽

Gender and sport: fighting the gap in athletes careers

The relationship between gender and sport is a very interesting and inspiring topic. Women have had to struggle to find their space within the sporting games and especially to compete at high levels (think, for example, of the Olympics) because of social order and decency issues. Some sources even states that in the past people believed that it was harmful for women to exercise. For example, cycling was considered dangerous because it was believed it could lead to infertility. Moreover, another obstacle for women's participation in sport was their clothes, heavy clothing (underwear could weigh up to six kilos) and tight bodices hindered the practice of sport.  Italian TV RAI produced an interesting documentary on the relationship between gender and sport in history: Passato e presente, Donne e sport (2023).
